In my journey to discover new designers and their unique stories, my recent trip to Russia in December introduced me to a standout talent – Gapanovich. While I’m still busy curating events at Milan Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, I’ve also set my sights on exploring Russian designers, especially those with deep connections to cultural Russian codes. I’m optimistic that this exploration will open doors to exciting projects that beautifully capture the rich history and genuine values of the Russian people.
Inspired by the mystique of the Far North, Gapanovich skillfully weaves local imagery, patterns, and intricate details into the global realm of conceptual luxury. The brand’s unique features include delightful ruffles, intricate hand-knitting, strategic volume play, thoughtful layering, and exquisite hand craftsmanship.
Gapanovich’s journey into the world of fashion began in her childhood, spending significant time at her mother’s sewing factory. A turning point occurred during a competition at the age of 17-18, sparking a conscious desire to become a designer.
Despite facing early challenges and critiques, Gapanovich persevered, securing the Grand Prix at theMurmansk festival the following year. Later experiences, including participation in the “Industry Professionals of Fashion” competition, fueled her creative ambitions.
In 2019, recognizing the need for additional education, Gapanovich enrolled in an online branding and design course at Metrics Academy. This immersive experience deepened her understanding of brand DNA, values, and concept, resulting in a collection that earned a grant for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and marked a turning point for her brand.
Central to Gapanovich’s design narrative are themes of “generational connections” and “ancestral heritage.” The past serves as a profound source of inspiration, with an intentional effort to translate personal childhood experiences into clothing. The designer disrupts textures, ages fabrics, and weaves nostalgic elements into contemporary designs, creating a tangible connection between generations.
Additionally, the “culture of the peoples of the North” acts as a mysterious muse. Drawing inspiration from the Far North, Gapanovich infuses multilayered narratives into her designs, influenced by her upbringing in Murmansk’s cold climate and layers of winter attire.
In conclusion, Gapanovich’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of passion, resilience, and a profound connection to one’s roots. Stay tuned for more insights into this exceptional designer and others shaping the future of fashion with their unique perspectives.
