Napoli fashion on the road meets Vincenzo Gemito: After the characteristic district of Pignasecca that acted as stage for the last, fascinating episode of this exciting journey, the choice fell on the famous village of Marechiaro, a dreamlike scenario in which, through an interview , made to the patron of the stage Andrea Guerritore, curator of the Fonderia Gemito (Gemito Foundry), the project managers could almost bring back to life an artist with undisputed talent such as Vincenzo Gemito. Fonderia Gemito, founded in the 40s’ thanks to Nicola Guerritore and continued by his son Francesco Guerritore, is now brought forward by Andrea, great-grandson of the great Neapolitan artist, whose goal is to offer to the users of enthusiasts and lovers a product highly qualified, following the same path as the predecessor and at the same time trying to guarantee the same satisfactory result. With the summer now at the door and the sun that begins to appear more often on our Peninsula, what better choice to enhance the beauty of an area linked to the sea by an indissoluble bond? So water, one of the four elements of the earth, has been the undisputed protagonist of the imminent new chapter of this exciting journey.
A substance that can change into a blink of an eye, a striking representation of the unpredictability of events, just like the character and life of the great Gemito. Not only understood as a primordial element, a life-giving substance, but also as a matter capable of assuming multi-faceted aspects; can make us think now of the great expanse of the sea in its calm and tranquility when the sky is clear and the wind does not blow hard, now to an element that is opposed to the fire. The latter, as an element that turns on and therefore diametrically opposed to the cold, able to extinguish not only the flames but also the hot ardors, metaphorically speaking.
Gemito, a Neapolitan artist who lived in the 800 ‘whose disquiet made him a decidedly unconventional character and out of line. And it was precisely this turbulent life, lived for a long time at the margins of a society in which he felt too much because he was different from the masses and that he himself felt hostile, to relegate him to the oblivion of the great artists of the past. A great genius also recently celebrated with the publishing success of Wanda Marasco’s book “ ll genio dell’abbandono”, (The genius of abandonment).
The aim of this special stage of Napoli fashion on the road was to help reevaluate his misunderstood genius, to let the public know more about the talent of this Neapolitan sculptor, designer and goldsmith, whose production was intense. And it was precisely the water, an element that was so dear to him, perhaps precisely because he perfectly reflected his dreaming and turbulent soul and that inspired him in numerous works including, among others, the Pescatorello and the Acquaiolo, to name only some. Gemito loved his Naples, he loved to go around the alleys in search of great inspiration, before a strong intellectual crisis hit him, trying to shape what he saw firsthand and representing the jobs and the humblest people in society.
Marechiaro, a charming town with a decadent appeal, was the scene of this wonderful encounter with the sculptural art of Vincenzo Gemito. The decadence, the veracity, the realism evoked by the place, are opposed to the powerful classical beauty of the panorama of the Gulf of Naples. A beauty that is therefore suited to the artistic conception of Vincenzo Gemito, classicism and verismo. In this magical setting, the model, Federica, with its bewitching blue eyes and magnetic and sibylline charm, has been immortalized in the wonderful and evocative images created by the troupe, as well as the aerial ones, also extremely evocative, curated by Biagio Massa and Michele Albano , All in an artistic stage, recreated, using some of the main works of the Neapolitan artist, skilfully reproduced from the original casts, from the Fonderia Gemito: L’Acquaiolo, Nettuno, the Pescatoriello with dolphin, the self-portrait of Gemito, the Medallion with a Head of Medusa, and one with the head of Alexander the Great. The model to evoke our ancestors Greeks, wore the very special clothes of young designer Giuseppina Basile, celebrating an atmosphere literally suspended in time. A student at the prestigious Accademia delle Belle Arti in Naples founded back in 1752, Giuseppina prefers, in her way of working, purely color and symbols that interweave, without solution of continuity, in the plots of her clothes, creating an optical effect decidedly innovative and original.
The two proposed garments are part of the Gilania collection, a term composed of the Greek words gyne (woman) and andros (man) that was coined by the sociologist Ryan Eisler, who wants to indicate the union or lack of distinction between the sexes. An equality that existed since ancient times and which also permeated the Palaeolithic communities, as claimed by the archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, who observed and studied the complex system of their symbols. All this, in a merger and a game of exchanges that was made reality during this special stage of the Napoli fashion on the road project. Because art, culture and fashion are closer than you think.
